UTeach Initiative Starts at UALR

Educators in several UALR colleges are working together to recruit more science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) undergraduate students into teacher prep programs with the goal of adding teachers in these critical areas at public schools.

Chemical Society Honors Seniors, Professor

Members of the Arkansas chapter of the American Chemical Society, the Central Arkansas Local Section, have named UALR chemistry professor Dr. Ali U. Shaikh as the chapter’s “Professor of the Year.”

UALR Senior Wins Two Chemistry Awards

Jessica Hartman of Conway, a UALR senior majoring in chemistry, was a two-time winner at the recent Arkansas Academy of Science at Southern Arkansas University.

Central, LISA Academy Win Science Olympiad

Little Rock Central High School Team 2 won first place in the senior high division of the Arkansas Science Olympiad hosted by UALR Saturday, April 14. LISA Academy placed first among middle school teams. The Arkansas state competition is sponsored by UALR’s College of Science and Mathematics, the Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology (EIT), and College of the Central, LISA Academy Win Science Olympiad

Engineering Team Wins First Place

Stephen Kirchner and James Taylor, students in UALR’s Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology, won first place in the design contest at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Region 5 Annual Conference April 20 and 21 in Tulsa, Okla.

UALR Hosts Arkansas Science Olympiad

UALR will host the Arkansas Science Olympiad Saturday, April 14, offering middle and high school students and their schools a chance to participate in the National Science Olympiad in Orlando, Fla.

Nobel Laureate to Lecture April 12

Nobel Laureate David Gross, who with two others won the 2004 physics prize for explaining how the elementary constituents of the atomic nucleus are bound together, will lecture at UALR 4 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in Dickinson Hall Auditorium.

Fribourgh Award Honors H. Watt Gregory III

H. Watt Gregory III, a partner in Kutak Rock LLP which helps its clients with their emerging technology needs, was honored Tuesday, March 27, as the 2012 recipient of UALR’s Fribourgh Award.

Bio-Chem Sophomore Places in National Research Competition

Bukola Odeniyi, a UALR sophomore majoring in biology and chemistry, won second place in cell biology for her poster at the Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) last month in Atlanta.
