Four UALR students will benefit this year from scholarships established by father and son benefactors of UALR.

The UALR Alumni Association and Foundation Fund Board will present its top honors of the year Friday, May 13, at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.

Harold and Syble Gwatney, parents of the late state senator and Democratic Party chair Bill Gwatney, have presented UALR with an additional gift of $50,000 to increase the endowment of a political science scholarship in their son’s memory.

UALR’s William H. Bowen School of Law has received a gift of $134,000 from the estate of Anne C. Haley, completing a $184,000 endowment honoring her late husband, John Thomas Haley.

UALR will honor Dr. B. Alan and Jean Sugg at the sixth annual Finale, benefiting the university’s arts programs. The gala begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, in the Jack Stephens Center.

Janet Jones, founder and president of the The Janet Jones Company, has created a $25,000 mentorship program honoring Dr. Alex Biris, chief scientist of UALR’s Nanotechnology Center.

The UALR College of Science and Mathematics’ second annual Fribourgh Award ceremony on March 31 at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion raised more than $25,000 for scholarships in math and science at UALR.

The Laser Law Firm of Little Rock has established an endowed scholarship at the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law in honor of the firm’s late founder, Sam Laser.

Reinforcing its commitment to early childhood literacy, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation (WRF) has announced a $400,000 grant to UALR and its Reading Recovery training efforts in the Center for Literacy in the UALR College of Education.

UALR Trojan men’s basketball standout and Los Angeles Laker Derek Fisher added to the UALR Foundation’s coffers last week when he and teammate Shannon Brown won $75,000 on the hit NBC game show, “Minute to Win It.”
