UA Little Rock Researchers Out to Uncover the Secrets of Personal Transformation Rooted in Heifer International’s Community-Building Efforts

An interdisciplinary research team from UA Little Rock is investigating the personal transformation effects of Heifer International's efforts to end poverty and build sustainable communities across the globe. The team includes, from left, Dr. Avinash Thombre, professor of applied communication, Dr. Julien Mirivel, professor of applied communication, , Dr. Tusty ten Bensel, director of the School of Criminal Justice and Criminology, and Dr. Kirk Leach, assistant professor of public affairs.

UA Little Rock, Heifer International launch partnership to promote sustainable agriculture, gardening practices

Heifer International CFO Bill Bloom, left, exchanges spinach grown in Heifer’s Urban Farm with UA Little Rock Chancellor Kristy Drale, right, for honey aquired by bees in the university’s Campus Garden after signing a partnership launching a pilot project to build awareness around regenerative agriculture and sustainable gardening practices. The project will allow the institutions to share resources (time, equipment, and volunteers) to educate students and the public on increasing accessibility to local, nutritious food for those in the community through the Trojan Food Pantry, community farm stand, and donations to local organizations, such as the Arkansas Hunger ReliefAlliance. The project will include workshops and workdays at Heifer’s Urban Farm, Ranch in Perryville, Ark., and UA Little Rock’s Campus Garden.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Heifer International have partnered to build awareness around regenerative agriculture and sustainable gardening practices in central Arkansas.

UA Little Rock Donaghey Scholar Dylan Wright will graduate Dec. 14 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and minors in economics, math, and creative writing. The Little Rock native has also studied human rights and social movements at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina during a study abroad trip offered by the Donaghey Scholars program.
