On March 13, UA Little Rock business students will attend the spring 2026 Etiquette Luncheon. Designed to advance the university’s commitment to student success, the luncheon fosters both personal and professional growth. For many students — particularly the university’s large population of first-generation college students — the event provides valuable exposure to professional experiences they may not have encountered before.

Through engaging activities and expert guidance, students gain business confidence, master dining etiquette and form connections that set them apart after graduation. Held each semester, the Etiquette Lunch is part of the Career Catalyst Program, developed by School of Business faculty and staff to prepare business majors for the workforce. Through clinics, workshops and events, the Career Catalyst Program helps students become career-ready.

Before the meal, students network with peers and business professionals, practicing introductions, handshakes and conversation in a formal setting. During the luncheon, students develop practical etiquette skills, from navigating place settings to understanding meal service, while receiving immediate feedback. Organizers explain the importance of each standard, showing how etiquette conveys respect, awareness and professionalism in business interactions.

Director of Business Networks and real estate development instructor Elizabeth Small is the faculty organizer of the luncheon, bringing more than 30 years of business experience to the event. Small emphasized the event’s long-term impact.

“The Etiquette Lunch is a proven way for students to gain confidence when attending a professional lunch, dinner, or banquet,” Small said. “Job interviews may occur during a meal, and feeling comfortable with the place settings, the restaurant staff, and claiming the correct water glass can make a tremendous difference.”

By providing this experience in an instructional environment, the event equips all students, regardless of background, with the tools and confidence to navigate professional settings successfully.

For past attendee April Turner, this experience highlighted how valuable opportunities like this are for all students.

“Attending the Etiquette Lunch was an unforgettable experience,” Turner said. “It was hands-on, engaging, and taught me professional dining and social skills that I’ll carry into my future career. It boosted my confidence in professional settings, and I believe every student should have the opportunity to experience something like this.”

Events like the Etiquette Lunch demonstrate how preparation and opportunity intersect at UA Little Rock. Through the luncheon, students do not just learn business theory, but practice real-world skills that shape first impressions, build professional relationships, and open doors to future opportunities. For first-generation or nontraditional students especially, this experience provides meaningful access to experiences that may otherwise feel unfamiliar or out of reach. This event creates a supportive environment for learning and building confidence, empowering students to walk into professional settings prepared, polished, and ready to succeed.
