Acclaimed Photographer Todd Hido to Deliver Public Lecture at UA Little Rock as Part of Photography Conference

Todd Hido’s photographs invite viewers to look beyond what is immediately visible, finding atmosphere, mystery and emotion in familiar places.
On Friday, Oct. 24, the internationally acclaimed photographer will bring his perspective on image-making to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as the keynote speaker for the Society for Photographic Education South Central Chapter Conference.
“For the weekend of Oct. 23-24, UA Little Rock hopes to be the center of contemporary photography in the Southeast and beyond,” said Brian Young, Windgate Center for Art + Design (WCAD) gallery director. “We are doing this through special exhibitions, guest speakers, and visitors from around this region, including Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and from around our own state.”
The two-day conference brings together photographers, educators, and students to explore contemporary photography. The Society for Photographic Education supports photography education and fosters understanding of photography and related media through conferences, events and publications.
The conference is part of the WCAD fall photography season, which features exhibitions by nationally recognized artists and emerging voices exploring the evolving direction of contemporary image-making.
Hido’s “A Series of Small Decisions” is the season’s headline exhibition, featuring his atmospheric photographs of suburban landscapes and interiors. Also on view is “Invictus: Photographs of Angela Strassheim,” showcasing the work of another nationally recognized photographer, whose psychologically charged images explore family, memory, and community. Both exhibitions are on view at the WCAD through Oct. 26.
Both artists are also featured in the current “Nocturnes,” an exhibition drawn from the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Their simultaneous inclusion in UA Little Rock’s fall lineup places the university in conversation with a major national presentation of contemporary photography. For Arkansas audiences, the university’s exhibitions offer an opportunity to experience the work of these internationally recognized artists close to home.
Hido will deliver his keynote lecture, “Sources of Influence,” at 3 p.m. Oct. 24 in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building.
“I’ll be talking about my work and where it comes from, and the influences that I’ve had in teaching and making photographs for the last 30 years,” said Hido.
Free and open to the public, the lecture offers an opportunity to step inside the creative mind of an internationally acclaimed photographer and gain a deeper appreciation for the vision behind his work.
