UA Little Rock Welcomes Doug Stowe as Featured artWORKs Artist for Spring 2023
UA Little Rock’s School of Art and Design will host Doug Stowe as he leads both a lecture and a workshop as part of the artWORKs series.
Made possible through the Windgate Foundation, the UA Little Rock artWORKs Series brings renowned artists to the UA Little Rock campus where they can collaborate and craft a community that values learning and the visual arts.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m Friday, April 14, in room 101 of the Windgate Center of Art and Design, and a workshop open to the public will be held on Saturday, April 15.
Since 1976, Stowe has not only been active in the woodworking industry as a self-employed furniture and box maker, but he has also written over a dozen books on the topic, with his most recent book, “The Wisdom of Our Hands: Crafting, a Life,” published in 2022. In addition, as a former teacher, he created a woodworking program in K-12 schools that emphasizes hands-on learning called Wisdom of the Hands.
Stowe’s April 14 lecture will discuss his career in woodworking.
“Doug will discuss his woodworking and teaching career and his beliefs on the importance of craft education,” said Peter Scheidt, the Windgate assistant professor of furniture design and woodworking.“He’s an engaging and eloquent speaker.”
Saturday’s workshop will be held in the Furniture/Woodworking Studio in the Windgate Center of Art and Design from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. where Stowe will be discussing small wooden box making techniques.
“We welcome anybody to attend the lecture and/or stop in Saturday to meet Doug, watch him work, and check out the UA Little Rock woodshop,” Scheidt said.
