She is a scholar specializing in Latin American literature and culture, with a focus on 21st-century Mexican and Peruvian productions, particularly in the chronicle genre. Her research spans journalism, cultural studies, memory studies, gender politics, critical race theory, and film studies. Dr. Sotelo earned her Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of Oregon, her M.A. in Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, and her B.A. from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Apart from academia, her pastime interests include hiking, walking on the beach, drinking a good cup of coffee, and playing chess.
