Pulaski Heights Christian Church and the Broadway Bridge Project

By Rhodes Houser

Pulaski Heights Christian Church is situated on a quiet corner in Hillcrest, mixed in with the houses in the neighborhood.  At 4724 Hillcrest Ave., the arched glass front gives a very warm welcome to all on sunny days, and a place of sanctuary on darker ones. PHCC embodies the term “open and affirming,” a title declared made 26 years ago. This declaration is a public statement that all are welcome regardless of race, gender, sexuality, or any other difference that may separate. As you walk through the procession and get to know the close-knit staff, it is apparent that they too live by this statement.

Pulaski Heights Christian Church does more than just take care of their own members, they feel a responsibility to extend their reach. For over three years they have been aiding those in need with the Broadway Bridge Project. Newly welcomed Rev. Miles emphasizes this importance saying, “It isn’t enough to pray and ask God to bless those who are less fortunate. We have a responsibility, and I can’t stress the word responsibility enough, to serve others.” With their partners at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church, they feed and provide essentials once a month to those in need.

Rev. Carol Miles and PHCC Member John Graves After a Sunday Service

Every third Monday of the month, Pulaski Heights Christian Church and Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church gather at 2501 S. Arch St., where From His Thrones Ministries lends out their building for the ministry. They bring enough food, prepped the day before after the Sunday service, to feed 125 people of “every age, race, sexuality, even people who have jobs and are just having a hard time,” adds John Graves, a long-time member. After everyone has eaten, essentials like toothbrushes, bug spray, socks, and blankets are passed out, varying based on the needs of the season. Dinner is served at 6 p.m., so don’t be late; anyone is welcome.
