SNRC Exhibits Wiggins Nativity Scene Collection

UALR’s Sequoyah National Research Center will exhibit a collection of Native American nativity scenes during the holiday season in the Dr. J.W. Wiggins Native American Art Gallery at the center in Suite 500 at UALR’s University Plaza.

The exhibit, part of the Wiggins’ art collection, opens at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, and runs through Friday, Jan. 14, 2011.

The 37 scenes — including this 1981 nativity set by Marie G. Romero of Jemez Pueblo — were made predominately by Indians from the Southwest United States and Mexico.

Materials used to make the nativity scenes vary from pottery, wood, papier-mâché, and stone. The collection was assembled by Wiggins over the past 35 years as part of his collection.

The gallery is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11. UALR’s campus, including the gallery, will be closed from Friday, Dec. 17 and will be reopen on Jan. 4, 2011.
