Faculty to present racial justice research April 29

Last spring the institute launched a competition inviting proposals for research to provide sound data specific to Arkansas to help guide public policy.
The institute awarded several multi-disciplinary grants to faculty and graduate students, and the colloquium is an opportunity for researchers to share their findings with the UALR campus and the wider community, according to institute Director Dr. Michael R. Twyman.
“This multi-disciplinary collaboration helped further the institute’s major goals of using solid research to solve problems related to race,” Twyman said.
Dr. Michael Craw will present “Evaluating the Impact of Community-Based Organizations on Racial Disparities in Little Rock Neighborhoods.” Craw is an assistant professor and coordinator for the Master of Public Administration Program, Center for Public Collaboration in the UALR Institute of Government.
Dr. John A. Kuykendall, associate professor of higher education in the Department of Educational Leadership, will present “Investigating Black Male Student Athletes and Racial Inequities at Four Arkansas Intercollegiate Athletic Programs.”
Dr. Timothy Brown, professor in the Department of Criminal Justice, Dr. Ken Galchus, professor in the Department of Economics and Finance, and graduate student Marc Glidden will present “Racial Differences in Financial Literacy Among Prisoners in Arkansas’s Correctional Institutions.”
Some of the other projects conducted through the IRE Research Program address issues such as sentencing disparities in the criminal justice system, and disproportionate minority contact in the juvenile justice system.
