UA Little Rock presents political research talk April 3

Faculty, staff, and students at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock have the opportunity to hear political researcher Dr. Martijn Schoonvelde discuss his latest research with the UA Little Rock School of Public Affairs.

The talk will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, in Donaghey Student Center Room G.

Schoonvelde will discuss the key findings of his working paper, “Blame Avoidance in Leader Speeches during the Economic Crisis in Europe.”

His research involved studying three communication strategies —  issue emphasis, issue emphasis with benchmarking, and blame shifting — to help analyze 3,453 speeches of prime ministers in Germany, Great Britain, Greece, and Spain between 2007 and 2015.
Schoonvelde is an esteemed researcher of political science, having served as an associate research fellow at Exeter University in the United Kingdom and as the Max Weber fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.

He is now a postdoctoral fellow in political science at the Free University in Amsterdam, where he works on the European Union’s Horizon 2020 project. EUENGAGE, a research and innovation program, is designed to investigate tensions between powerful European governance and the military.
