Students at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock are raving about the new hot wheels that hit campus Feb. 15, thanks to a new bike-sharing program launched by the UA Little Rock Sustainability Committee.

“I helped unload the bikes, and they are a smooth ride,” said Monika Sandlin, accounting student in the College of Business. “They even have headlights and tail lights for when the sun goes down.”

Brian Gregory, Student Government Association president, said he believes the new spin bikes will add value to the Trojan community.

“The spin bike program will provide the university with ample opportunity to create a greater sense of campus community,” he said. “It will also help the university and the city provide more efforts for environmental sustainability.”

UA Little Rock is now home to 200 “dockless” spin bikes that students can use to ride around campus. The bright orange bikes can be unlocked by downloading the Spin App and scanning the QR code located on the back of the seat. Cyclists can pay 50 cents for 30 minutes, $14 a month using Apple or Android Pay, or input their credit card information into the company’s app.

“Some [students] might shrink at essentially “renting” the bikes, but it is a good trade off, especially if you need to get across campus quickly or just want to hit the trails and ride around campus on a lazy day,” Sandlin said. “Plus, the fact you can pay for a month upfront is a great deal because you sign on, unlock the bike, then lock it up again, and it turns the system off.”

The bikes can be found and parked outside of Ottenheimer Library, residence halls, Donaghey Student Center, and near parking lots.
