Graduating Student Spotlight: Lexus Ford
Transfer student Lexus Ford will graduate on May 14 with a bachelor’s degree in applied communication.
Why did you choose to study your major?
To be completely transparent, my reason for choosing communication is because I had a very uncomfortable level of anxiety when speaking with others in big groups rather than in individual settings or small groups. My main goal was to learn how to communicate with others effortlessly and without so much anxiety.
How did you end up as a student at UA Little Rock?
I’m a transfer student from the University of Central Arkansas. I ended up as a student at UA Little Rock because of their flexibility and availability of multiple resources. As a full-time worker, flexibility was very important to me when deciding to transfer and UA Little Rock has that by offering tons of online and accelerated classes.
What are your thoughts on graduating?
It’s honestly surreal. As graduation approaches and as I’m preparing invites, taking pictures, submitting orders for my cap and gown, receiving email confirmations about my graduation application… I’ve realized that I’m really at the finish line, and I couldn’t be more nervously excited.
Do you have a favorite professor or moment from your time at UA Little Rock?
I’m extremely grateful for April Chatham-Carpenter, Kristen McIntrye, and Amanda West-Halford. I believe they made a very huge impact on my growth in communication.
What are your future plans now that you are graduating?
Using the skills learned obtaining my communication degree, I recently received a full-time offer with Southwest Airlines. Right now, my goal is to stay with this company and work my way up the organization chart.
Did you have to overcome any obstacles to complete your education?
Yes, of course. There were many obstacles thrown my way that I had to overcome in order to complete my education. As I look back on each obstacle, I must highlight that although there were times I wanted to give up and throw in the towel, I’m grateful that I continued. My goal is to internalize obstacles and challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
What is the best advice you were given or would like to give to new college students?
Pick a major and a minor that aligns with you and/or your passion. When it’s all said and done, you really won’t regret it. It’s truly worth it. Think of it this way, time is going to continue moving regardless if you start now or later. What matters is what you’re doing as time passes by. In the end, you’ll either have a degree or not.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Believe in yourself and just do it! Your professors will support you. They are human too. Communicate with them, and you’ll exceed your own expectations.
