Jef Ferguson, a UALR graduate student in the School of Mass Communications, wrote a grant for his Rhetoric and Writing class this semester, and it landed him a job.

Tanner Critz began a literal and figurative journey during his senior year as a Donaghey Scholar and anthropology major at UALR in 1995. First, he had to convince his professor that spending six months hiking the Appalachian Trail qualified as research.

UALR’s Departments of English and Rhetoric and Writing will sponsor a reading by Kevin Brockmeier, author of “The Illumination,” “The Brief History of the Dead,” and “The Truth about Celia,” from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building.

Three UALR alumni have been selected to participate in the first annual Oxford American Summit for Ambitious Writers to be held at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute later this month.

Budding writers in the campus community interested in telling their own stories or the biography of another are invited to a workshop from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in Ledbetter Hall Room C in the Donaghey Student Center.

Dr. David Fisher, a professor in UALR’s Department of Rhetoric and Writing, will speak at a writer’s workshop from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, in Room D of the Donaghey Student Center. The event is sponsored by the UALR Writer’s Network. For more information, contact Lauren White.

An essay written by Michael Kleine, professor of rhetoric and writing, will appear in Writing About Writing, a compilation of the best articles about writing in the 20th century.

Dr. Andrea W. Hermann, professor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing, offers students a way to tour the Middle East without leaving Arkansas. All it takes is enrolling in her Tuesday evening class, “Reading and Writing in the Middle East.”

Downtown Little Rock is a hub for nightlife, food and local culture. No wonder it’s the ideal place for writers to find inspiration. For the 12 school teachers in the Little Rock Writing Project’s Summer Invitational Institute, a day-long writing marathon downtown led to personal essays, a profile of a River Market artist, and poetry.

The UALR Department of Rhetoric and Writing has established the River Market Press, which will specialize in the publication of nonfiction works such as autobiographies, biographies, memoirs, and personal essay collections. The press is print-on-demand, where new copies of a book are not printed until an order has been received.
