Course Curriculum Overview

The Spanish major is compromised of 30 credit hours of intermediate and advanced Spanish language, literature, and culture. Students are required to take the Spanish Core Curriculum before advancing on to higher levels of coursework.
- The Spanish BA can be either a major or a double major
- Including the Spanish core, the Spanish BA is approximately ten courses in length.
- Students must take at least one of the following culture courses:
- SPAN 31733 – Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies
- SPAN 33433 – Hispanic Culture: Peninsular
- SPAN 33533 – Hispanic Culture: Americas
- SPAN 33633 – Hispanic Cultures
- Students must take at least one semester of SPAN 46133 – Seminar
- Starting in Spring 2027, Spanish majors and double majors will need to have taken SPAN 47333 – Spanish Capstone in order to graduate
- Students must have 15 credit hours of SPAN electives
- If not a double major, Students must have a declared minor in another field

Why Study Spanish?
Spanish is spoken in 31 countries and by over 600 million people worldwide. In the United States, nearly 60 million people speak Spanish. Most institutions of higher learning require a second language in their curriculum. If that doesn’t convince you, here are some more interesting facts:
- Bilingual speakers on average make up to 20% more than their counterparts in any given career field. Source
- There is a high demand for bilingual professionals in every field, especially in medical and legal careers. Source
- Students who learn a second language perform better in sciences and mathematics than students who do not learn a second language. Source
- Arkansas has one of the fastest-growing Spanish speaking populations in the United States. Source
- In 2020, an estimated 50,000 Latinos lived in the Central Arkansas area. Source
