BFA in Art / Second Degree Requirements

Baccalaureate Art Graduates Seeking the BFA as a Second Degree

Students who have graduated with a BA in Art or a BA in Studio Art who want to obtain a BFA in Art / Fine Art Track or Applied design Track will need to:

  • Pass the requirements for admission to the BFA degree.
  • Fulfill all course requirements for the BFA degree.
  • Complete a minimum of 30 hours at UALR (required by the university for a second baccalaureate degree). Complete, with a minimum grade of C, all art course requirements for the BFA in Art as designated by the Department of Art. A student may wish to have a new studio emphasis in the BFA (Option A below), or a student may wish to continue the studio emphasis area in the first baccalaureate degree in art (Option B below). Depending on the transcript review of the first degree, and the objective for the emphasis area, some hours for the BFA may be filled by elective courses.

Requirements for BFA in Art as a Second Degree

1. Admission to the BFA by application and portfolio review. For the current academic year requirements of the portfolio review process, application form, and required GPA click here. Second Degree seeking students will fall under Tier 3 of the required portfolio requirements.

2. Fulfill all course requirements for the BFA degree; some will have been met by first baccalaureate degree in art.

BFA Required Studio Prerequisites

  • ARST 1310 Basic Drawing
  • ARST 1315 2D Design
  • ARST 2310 Figure Drawing
  • ARST 2315 3D Design
  • ARST 2318 Computer Applications in Art*

BFA Required Art History

  • ARHA 2310 Survey of the History of Art I
  • ARHA 2311 Survey of the History of Art II
  • ARHA 2312 Survey of Non-Western Art
  • Two upper level art history electives; ARHA 3309, History of Design, option for Applied Design track

BFA Required Studio Art Foundations

6 hrs required for 2D students, 12 hrs required for 3D students

  • ARST 3312 Contemporary Craft*
  • ARST 3360 Introduction to Sculpture*
  • ARAD 3310 Introduction to Furniture Design*
  • ARAD 3320 Introduction Metalsmithing & Jewelry*
  • ARAD 3330 Introduction to Fiber Design*
  • ARAD 3340 Introduction to Blacksmithing*
  • ARAD 3350 Introduction to Ceramics*

12 hrs required for 2D students, 6 hrs required for 3D students

  • ARST 3310 Drawing: Creative Invention*
  • ARST 3320 Painting Fundamentals 1*
  • ARST 3330 Printmaking Basics*
  • ARST 3340 Introduction to Graphic Design*
  • ARST 3370 Introduction to Photography*
  • ARST 3380 Introduction to Illustration*

3. Complete, with a minimum grade of C, all art course requirements for the BFA in Art as designated by the Department of Art.

  • 6 hrs – Studio Foundations courses not previously taken in the first baccalaureate degree in art. Students may be required to take more than 6 hours of Studio Foundation courses if they do not meet the BFA requirements for a 2D or a 3D emphasis.

Option A.

Second Degree BFA students seeking a new studio emphasis, one that differs from the first degree will take:

  • 12 hrs – Upper level courses in Fine Art or Applied Design emphasis beyond beginning studio art foundations
  • 3 hrs – Upper level studio art elective from ARAD or ARST
  • 3 hrs – ARST 4397 Capstone: Studio Art or internship in selected emphasis area.
  • 6 hrs – ARST 4394 and ARST 4395 BFA Project (1 & 2) Two courses taken in sequence; includes group critiques and senior exhibit. Student completes a total of 21 hrs in chosen studio emphasis, excluding capstone/internship.

Totals a minimum of 30 hours for a second baccalaureate degree; more hours needed if studio pre-requisites, studio foundation, and art history requirements not met in first degree.

Option B.

Second Degree BFA students seeking the same studio emphasis as the first degree will take:

  • 3 hrs – Upper level course in Fine Art or Applied Design emphasis not previously taken in the first degree
  • 12 hrs – Upper level courses in Fine Art, Applied Design, Art History, or any university course not previously taken in the first degree
  • 3 hrs – ARST 4397 Capstone: Studio Art or internship in selected emphasis area.
  • 6 hrs– ARST 4394 and ARST 4395 BFA Project (1 & 2) Two courses taken in sequence; includes group critiques and senior exhibit. Student completes a total of 21 hrs in chosen studio emphasis, excluding capstone/internship.

Totals a minimum of 30 hours for second baccalaureate degree; more hours needed if studio pre-requisites, studio foundation, and art history requirements not met in first degree.
