Marketing students reach finals in Peer 2 Peer Challenging Extremism competition

Geissler Marketing Students group shotDr. Gary Geissler and his marketing students, Glen Ritta (Marketing), Cathy Heathscott (Marketing), Hillary Haley (Mass Communications), Shannon Carroll (Marketing), and Quay Allen-Smith (Marketing), are one of six finalists in the global competition to combat violent extremism.

Students in the Advertising – Integrated Marketing Campaign – class competed with 45 other universities across the globe in a competition being facilitated by EdVentures Partners, a marketing agency that partners with clients and universities.  Participating universities were tasked with the challenge of developing an online campaign to counter the efforts of violent extremist groups who utilize social media to recruit new members.

The US Department of State and Facebook partnered with EdVenture on this campaign.  Three finalists were chosen by the Department of State and three finalists, which include the team from UALR, were chosen by Facebook.  The other two finalists in the Facebook Global Digital Challenge are Gulf University for Science and Technology located in Kuwait City, Kuwait and Turku School of Economics, located in Turku, Finland.  While all the teams competing were tasked with creating a digital campaign to counter violent extremism, the Facebook Global Digital Challenge judged teams on how well they integrated their digital campaign with Facebook.

The five member UALR team will travel to Washington D.C. on January 30, 2016 and compete with the two other Facebook Global Digital Challenge finalists on February 3, 2016.
