Many of the sub-disciplines of the Earth Sciences are field-based, and the Earth Sciences department incorporates fieldwork into many, if not most, of our courses and research activities. In fact, two of the core courses of the Geology major are Field Methods I and Field Methods II. Field methods I is a course intended for geology majors in their sophomore year, and it involves field exercises in the Little Rock area and a semester-long field mapping projects in the Ouachita Mountains west of town. Field Methods II is a 3-week course that travels to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico to do geological field mapping projects.
