Lady Trojans start conference play 2-0

After the Christmas break, the Lady Trojans began conference play on the road and defeated the North Texas Mean Green 59-54 on Thursday, Dec. 30. They also upended the Denver Pioneers 49-46 on Monday to start the new year on a winning note.

Shanika Butler scored 14 points and had five assists to lead the Trojans (8-5, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference) over Denver (9-6, 1-1 SBC), while Chastity Reed led UALR with 18 points in the team’s win over North Texas (3-11, 0-1 SBC).

Reed, the Trojans’ leading scorer, led the team in scoring for the two games with a 14 point average, but only shot 33 percent from the field. Before the two conference games, Reed was averaging 19.8 points and had a 46 percent field-goal percentage.

Junior Marian Kursh had a solid start to conference play averaging 10 points and 6 rebounds, while averaging 25 minutes in the two games. She also shot 56 percent from the field.

The Trojans begin conference play at home against the Troy Trojans on Saturday, Jan. 8, at 4:30 p.m. as part of a double-header. The UALR men play Troy at 7 p.m. after the women’s game.
