Golf wins before championships
The men’s golf team shot a 12-under par in the final round to win the rain-shortened Red Wolf Classic by a stroke on Tuesday, April 12, in Jonesboro, Ark. The team shot 2-over par in the 18-team event to close the first round on Monday.
Three Trojans shot under par for the tournament, led by seniors Linus Gillgren (73, 67 – 140) and Felipe Velazquez’s (71, 69 – 140) 4-unders, tying them for eighth. Senior Dylan Raines (72, 69) finished in 14th place for the tournament, shooting 3-under par.
The Trojans only had one golfer shoot under par all year when Velazquez shot 2-under par at the Purple and Red Invitational in Salt Lake City, Utah, in October. Having three players shoot under par shows the team’s improvement.
Sophomore Nicklaus Benton shot 1-over par in the final round, which tied him for 26th. Senior Keith Becker Jr. shot 6-over that tied him for 62nd place and freshman Nick Zimmerman tied for 73rd, shooting 7-over.
The Trojans travel to Muscle Shoals, Ala., for the Sun Belt Conference Championships starting Monday.
