The nation’s leading scorer proved too much of a challenge as the Lady Trojans fell to Delaware 73-42 in their first-round matchup on Sunday afternoon, March 18, at the Jack Stephens Center.

Blue Hen combo guard Elena Delle Donne led all scorers with 39 points on 14-of-27 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc.

UALR (20-13) trailed by 10 at the half 32-22 but found baskets hard to come by in the second half.

With the score tied at 6-6 at the 15:49  mark in the first half, Delaware reeled off a quick 11-0 run over the next three minutes, capped off by a three-pointer from Delle Donne with 12:29 left in the half.

The Trojans were able to cut the lead to six points at 17-11 on a three-pointer from freshman Taylor Gault and a layup by senior Britteni Williams, but they would never be able to get any closer.

Gault struggled from the field and had just seven points on 3-of-19 shooting.

“I think a lot of it was freshman nerves,” said head coach Joe Foley.

Senior forward Marian Kursh paced the Trojans with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go along with eight rebounds.

Delaware opened the second half with a 5-0 run in the first :49 seconds.

The Blue Hens would hold the Trojans to just one basket for over nine minutes until a jumper by freshman Kiera Clark at the 6:51 mark ended a 16-2 Delaware run that put the game out of reach.

“I still felt like we were in it at halftime,” said Foley. “But they came out and hit a couple of threes and it goes downhill from there.”

Delle Donne set an arena record with her 39 point effort, besting Chastity Reed’s previous mark of 37.

Delaware will move on to face Kansas on Tuesday evening, March 20, at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock. Tip-off is set for 8:40.
