The MAC (Mathematics Assistance Center), or “Math Lab,” is now up and running at its new location in ETAS 409.

This change allows tutors and other employees of the Mathematics Assistance Center of the to be closer to STEM-related majors, who tend to frequent the lab.

“We have tutoring for pre-core mathematics and the entire core curriculum mathematics, some advanced [courses], as well as statistics, physics, and engineering. Different tutors have different expertise. So if you come in and talk with us, [we] can figure out [your tutoring] schedule,” says Jamie Spickes, a MAC tutor. “If you can’t ‘get going,’ there are so many resources available—books, solution manuals; and we can also help people learn about different online resources.”

The lab’s hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, and also 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

“We like it when people sign in and ask for help!” says Denise LeGrand, MAC director.

There is no need to feel intimidated when coming to the lab. Usually about three tutors are available at any given time. No appointment is necessary, so you can just walk in anytime the lab is open. It’s a very laid-back and relaxed atmosphere. Private tutoring is also available. Depending on your learning style, you can work in a group at one of the whiteboards or study in the back at one of the quiet areas. A student lounge is also available for use with comfy couches and a refrigerator. The MAC is a great place to study, get help on homework, or even just chill out with friends in between classes.

Also, if you are interested in joining the Math Club, which is open to all majors, please contact Sam Lawhorn by email at ualrmathclub@gmail.com or text 334-422-MATH (6284). The first meeting will be Friday, September 18, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the MAC Lounge.

The staff and tutors are always happy to see fresh faces! If you have any questions about the MAC or need more information about their services, the office number is 501-371-7667.
