In 2012, Professor Casey became the Interim Dean of the law school and is the first woman to serve the school in that capacity. Dean Casey taught on the faculty from 1978 to 1993 and rejoined it in 2001. From 1993 to 2000 she served as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas. During that time she was recognized four times by the FBI for special achievement and received a meritorious achievement award in 1997 from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force.
From 1991 to 1993 while on leave from UALR she served as chief counsel and legislative assistant to U.S. Sen. Dale Bumpers. She was an associate dean of the law school from 1986 to 1991. Dean Casey has published in the areas of federal criminal prosecution, family, juvenile and insurance law. She has taught Lawyering Skills, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Advanced Litigation, Family Law and Property.
Dean Casey has coached the school’s trial competition team since returning to the faculty, including the team that advanced to the Championship Rounds of the National Trial Competition in 2009. Based on the overall record of the school’s teams, UALR Bowen was invited to participate in NITA’s Tournament of Champions in 2008.
Dean Casey regularly teaches trial skills for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Since 2001 she has taught the Southern Regional Program at Southern Methodist University, serving as the Team Leader for the past eight years. She has also taught NITA’s National Program in Colorado several times and served as the Assistant Team Leader. In 2011 she was invited by Scotland’s Society of Solicitor Advocates to teach NITA’s trial skills program in Edinburgh, Scotland.
By appointment of the Arkansas Supreme Court, Dean Casey has served as reporter for the Supreme Court Committee on Jury Instructions – Criminal since 2004. She is a member of the Pulaski County Bar Board of Directors and of the Arkansas Bar Foundation Trust Committee. She is also an emeritus member of the Henry Woods American Inn of Court.
