Welcome to the membership information page for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Community Chorus. We welcome adult singers at all levels of musical experience and ability from the UALR and greater Little Rock communities. In addition to the information on this webpage, you can also learn more about what to expect in our choir by reading one of the handouts below:
- UALR Community Chorus new member orientation — Fall 2012 (Word)
- UALR Community Chorus new member orientation — Fall 2012 (PDF)
Our rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. during the months of August - December (fall semester) and January - April (spring semester). We perform one major concert each semester. There are no rehearsals or concerts during the summer.
Rehearsals are scheduled in the Fine Arts building on the UALR campus. We meet in Room 101A. Free parking is available near the Fine Arts building in Lot 13, just east of the Jack Stephens Center on University Avenue and 28th St. For a map of the campus, please visit http://ualr.edu/www/features/map/.
We particularly encourage new members to join us at the beginning of each semester, when we generally begin preparing new music for our fall and spring concerts. If you are a beginning singer, it is vital that you attend every rehearsal so that you will have time to learn the music. Experienced singers with strong sight reading skills are always welcome, and such singers may be able to join the chorus even after the semester has already started. For more information about joining in mid-semester, please contact our conductor, Dr. Bevan Keating (501-569-3499; email@example.com) or Dr. Karen Kuralt (501-569-8334; firstname.lastname@example.org).
For most concerts and rehearsals, the UALR Music Department will provide copies of the score for you, so you will not need to bring sheet music of your own. (Your membership fee helps the department pay for the scores; see below for more information about this fee.) You will be able to take this music home to practice with on your own, and you will return this music to the department at the end of each semester. We ask that you bring your score and a pencil with you to all rehearsals so that you can make performance notes as needed.
Throughout the semester, learning resources and rehearsal notes from Dr. Keating will be posted to the Vocal Area website. Once you join the choir, please visit the website regularly to make sure that you are up to date on the latest announcements, particularly if you must miss rehearsal for any reason. You can also receive announcements via email by joining the UALR Community Chorus listserv. Make sure that you give your contact information to Dr. Karen Kuralt when you join so that she can add you to the list.
Rehearsals start promptly at 7 p.m. each Thursday night. The room fills up quickly, so plan to arrive by 6:50 if at all possible. Because of the size of the group, it’s important that everyone be in place by 7 p.m. and that all members attend each rehearsal once they make the commitment to join the group. Each voice is important to our overall sound.
UALR Community Chorus is a class offered for university credit, so UALR students can register for the course and pay for it as they would for any class at the university. If you wish to receive credit for the course, please sign up for MUEN 4140.
If you are a student or community member who would prefer not to register for credit, we ask that you pay a $50 membership fee for each semester that you participate. This fee helps to pay for the copies of the music that we use, the rights to the music, venue booking fees, and for the professional orchestra players who accompany our concerts.
You can pay the $50 membership fee at the beginning of each semester — or, if you know that you will be participating for an entire year, you can simply pay $100 at one time. Please make your check payable to the UALR Community Chorus, and submit it to Dr. Keating as soon after you join as possible.
Note: No one will be turned away if he or she is financially unable to pay the membership fee. If the fee presents a financial hardship, please speak privately with Dr. Keating after your first or second rehearsal.
Choir members may attend rehearsals in casual dress, but all members are expected to obtain appropriate attire for our performances prior to the concert.
You must be measured for a floor-length black concert dress almost immediately after you join; otherwise, your dress may not arrive in time for the concert. Once the dress arrives, you may need to have it altered for fit and length. (You can see the dress and accompanying pin at http://www.stageaccents.com/quick_delivery/product/2573/start/1/; the sizing chart is located at http://www.stageaccents.com/charts/chart_b.html). The total cost of the dress and pin is $96. You may order the dress directly from the Stage Accents website, or you may choose to email your dress size to Dr. Kuralt and allow the chorus to place your order for you. If you order through the university, we must have payment in advance before we can place your dress order. Please make out your check to UALR Community Chorus.
At our performances, women are expected to wear the black concert dress with black stockings and closed-toe shoes. Simple stud earrings may be worn; a black necklace will be provided for you to wear on stage and return after the performance.
You are responsible for ordering or renting your own tux for the performance: black jacket, white shirt, and black bow tie, with black shoes and socks.
The week before each concert, we will provide you with a handout to remind you of the dress requirements, materials to bring with you, call times, room assignments, and emergency contact information.
