The 9thAnnual Racial Attitudes in Pulaski County Conference was held March 15, 2012. The focus of the conference was “Arkansas Media, Race, and Ethnicity: Accountability, Responsibility, and Opportunity,” The information provided by our featured media panelists was excellent and fueled enthusiastic participation from the more than 200-person audience. The panelists’ dialogue also served as a launching pad for the Roundtable Strategy Sessions that followed the panel discussion.
Featured panelists included John Brummett and Frank Fellone of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Malcolm Glover of KUAR public radio, Rafael Nunez of El Latino and the Arkansas Times, and Katherina Yancy of KATV Channel 7 news.
One of the questions posed by moderator and Institute Director Adjoa A. Aiyetoro was “How is the news created or what determines what gets reported?” Each panel member had varying answers to this question. See their responses below in the 2012 Racial Attitudes video.
This year, the conference included a luncheon and roundtable strategy session. The purpose of including the strategy session was to have open and honest dialogue from community members and their participation in developing strategies to address the concerns about race, ethnicity, and the media.
