A data mining, machine learning and data management enthusiast who pursues creative solutions to real-world problems.

We live in a world where enormous data are ubiquitous. My passion is to make sense of data by using innovative data mining and machine learning algorithms. My current interests are graph mining, latent structure mining,  very large graph data management, and bioinformatics.

Education:

PhD, Computer Science (Dr. rer. nat), 1998, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU)

MS, Computer Science, 1987, Shenyang Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Science

BS, Mathematics, 1983, Nankai University

Awards:

2014 SIGKDD Test of Time award for my work on the paper “A Density-Based Algorithm for Discovering Clusters in Large Spatial Databases with Noise” [KDD 1996]. “The SIGKDD Test of Time award recognizes outstanding papers from past KDD Conferences beyond the last decade that have had an important impact on the data mining research community.” Read the full article

Selected as an ORISE Faculty Research Program member in the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR).

Achievements:

SCAN, a clustering algorithm for large graphs such as social and biological networks has received over 323 citations since published in ACM SIGKDD’07 according to Google scholar. SCAN is also used by FDA for atBioNet - an Integrated Network Analysis Tool for Knowledge Expansion, Network Modeling and Visualization in Genomics and Proteomics.

DBSCAN, a density-based clustering algorithms has received over 6,389 citations according to Google scholar. DBSCAN is implemented in some most popular data mining and machine learning software including Weka and RapidMiner.

Both SCAN and DBSCAN algorithms are covered by many data mining textbooks.

Here is the link to a Wikipedia article about DBSCAN algorithm.

You may find my publications from Google scholar and DBLP.
