As part of Diversity Week at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Dr. David Briscoe will present a lecture, “How Can Black Parents Rear Their Children to Be Black Americans in a Color Conscious Society?”

The talk, part of the Plain Talk on Race and Ethnicity Lecture Series from the Anderson Institute on Race and Ethnicity, will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in Ottenheimer Library Suite 202.

Briscoe is a professor of sociology at UA Little Rock and an associate faculty member at the Anderson Institute. His principal interests lie in sociological and ethnographic approaches to African-American life and culture.

The lecture will explore the challenges for black parents who are raising children in the midst of complex historical, social, economic, and political factors embedded into the legal fabric of American society regarding African Americans. Briscoe also will provide strategies for black parents to help their children maintain an unyielding sense of their black identity.
