Recital to honor retiring UA Little Rock resident composer
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the Department of Music will host “The Music of Robert Boury” on Sunday, Oct. 14, as a farewell recital to Dr. Boury, who will retire in December after 37 years of teaching music.
The recital will begin at 3 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building and will be performed by guest artist and pianist Norman Boehm, a music professor at Hendrix College, and Suzanne Bannister, soprano. Admission is free and open to the public.
The program includes Sonatina for Piano, Carnations for Voice and Piano, Portrait of Chopin for Piano, Songs of Nature and Love (premiere), and selected piano pieces, including two ragtime pieces and three Lost Waltzes.
Dr. Boury, professor of music history and composition, will retire in December. “Dr. Bob,” as his students call him, will be remembered for great teaching and for writing the music for “UALR Spirit,” the university’s alma mater. Since 1986, Boury has hosted the annual Songwriters Showcase for students enrolled in his songwriting class and for songwriters in the community.
He has also been a composer-in-residence in K-6 schools in North Little Rock as well as Booker T. Washington Elementary and Rockefeller Elementary schools in Little Rock and Mount St. Mary Academy. He has composed many art songs, piano and chamber pieces, three symphonies and most recently, three children’s operas. Currently, he is creating works based on the names of God in the Bible, titled “Dialogue.”
