Mariposa and Friends to perform Sept. 25
The duo Mariposa will present a chamber music concert featuring the music of New England composer Gwyneth Walker, Sunday, Sept. 25, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
The concert, “Mariposa & Friends: Creative Sparks!,” starts at 3 p.m. at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the UALR Fine Arts Building.
Mariposa is composed of pianist Linda Holzer, a UALR professor of music, and Sandra McDonald, a violinist with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Mariposa was founded in 1998 and is on the Arkansas Arts Council’s roster for Arts on Tour.
The program will feature premiere work by Walker, who will be in attendance. The program will open with the 2016 composition, “Viva Violin!”
Based on folksongs from the Appalachian Mountains, the second performance is a piano solo, “Shady Grove.”
Cellist Stephen Feldman joins Mariposa for two expressive piano trios, “Mornings of Creation” and “Shadows & Light.”
Also featured on the program will be Walker’s 2014 string quartet, “The Dove,” including violinist Leanne Day-Simpson and violist Katherine Reynolds.
“The Dove” is a creative meditation on themes of peace, drawing on the English song, “The Dove,” the American song, “Peace, I Ask of Thee O River,” and ”Down By the Riverside.”
The string quartet performance occurs during Arkansas Peace Week in relation to the observance of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. The original music of the last movement, “In the Spirit of Peace,” was inspired by peace songs.
Admission to the concert is free. For more information, contact Holzer at 501.569.3294.
