As Power 92 radio deejay Travis “Tre’ Day” Rowan reached his milestone 40th birthday on July 23, he decided to celebrate his big day with an investment in the future. 

He donated $10,000 to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for the TreDay.com Scholarship for students in the UA Little Rock School of Mass Communication.

“UA Little Rock is definitely one of the beacons of light in the city,” he said. “I think of all my great memories here and how it changed me from a boy to a man, and I know it can do that for so many other kids growing up in maybe rough and tough neighborhoods and areas of the city.”

Dr. Timothy Edwards, chair of the School of Mass Communication, and Christina Smith, director of development for the College of Social Sciences and Communication, were both unaware of what Tre’ Day was planning when he asked for a meeting and were both delighted and surprised by the donation.

“Tre’ Day has been a great representative of the School of Mass Communication and UA Little Rock in terms of supporting students,” Edwards said. “He also guest speaks and serves on the advisory board. He’s a great example of an alum staying connected.”

Tre’ Day began his radio career in 1996 right out of high school. The name of his popular radio personality was given to him by his basketball teammates after hitting 11 three-pointers in a single game.

While a full-time student at UA Little Rock, Tre’ Day worked his way up from an internship to a full-time position at KIPR 92.3 FM, where he currently works as both the assistant program director and the host of the popular afternoon drive show, “Take it to the House.”

Education has always been important to Tre’ Day, who graduated with a 4.0 GPA in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication. Tre’ Day, who was once supported by a scholarship from UA Little Rock, has continuously and generously invested in education through his longtime scholarship program at UA Little Rock.

Much of the scholarship money is raised over Labor Day weekend with the “TreDay.com Charity Classic,” which features a tennis tournament, celebrity party, and silent auction. He has also donated equipment for two new audio production studios at UA Little Rock. The next charity classic will be Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.

Tre’ Day’s scholarship is open to students in the Department of Mass Communication pursuing a degree in film, radio, or television and who graduated from an Arkansas high school. Freshman applicants will have preference, but upper-level students are eligible.
