The UALR Department of Music will present a guest recital by pianist Dr. Sae-Hee Kim at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building.

Author and UALR graduate Stephanie Bayless will read excerpts from her book, “Obliged to Help: Adolphine Fletcher Terry and the Progressive South,” at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, in room 122 in Ross Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

UALR’s Department of English will offer a new course this fall that will explore how black women’s political activism is reflected in 19th and 20th century literature.

The UALR Theatre and Dance Department will hold dance scholarship interviews and dance technique placement auditions for the 2012-2013 academic year from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Center for the Performing Arts. All students must sign up for and schedule auditions and interviews before Feb. 3.

Johannes Möller, the 2010 first prize winner of the Guitar Foundation of America’s Concert Artist Competition, opens the spring Artspree stage at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Jef Ferguson, a UALR graduate student in the School of Mass Communications, wrote a grant for his Rhetoric and Writing class this semester, and it landed him a job.

UALR Theatre Arts and Dance graduate Marisa Kirby is getting into the Christmas spirit big time this year. She is playing a variety of roles — including the Ghost of Christmas Future — in the Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s production of “A Christmas Carol, The Musical.”

Mark D. Swanson, a former UALR assistant dean who established the Artspree performing arts series and the Community School for the Arts, died Sunday, Nov. 13, in his hometown of Minneapolis, Minn. He was 80.
