The University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s Biological Safety Manual provides information on work practices, procedures, and policies necessary to ensure the health and safety of individuals exposed to bio-hazardous agents in the workplace. The contents of the manual are based on current federal and state workplace safety guidelines and recommendations. Failure to comply with instructions contained in the manual may result in a violation of the regulations, codes, and laws that establish these guidelines and recommendations.
In general, federal and state law holds that an employer must furnish employees with a place of employment that is free from recognized hazards that are likely to cause death or serious physical harm. Paramount to a safe and healthful workplace is the establishment of a program that defines and details the necessary practices that serve as its basis. The manual is designed to promote bio-safety goals in departments, and in addition, details responsibilities of both the employer and the employee. By initiating protocols that are in keeping with current guidelines and recommendations, departments will also be able to assure compliance, especially in light of granting agency requirements.
Policies and procedures stated in the Biological Safety Manual require continuing evaluation, review, and approval by appropriate university officials. All statements reflect policies for procedures or procedures in existence at the time of writing, and the university reserves the right to change policies at any time.
