Policy Name: Laser Safety
Policy Number: LR 701.37
Effective Date: September 27, 2024

Policy

In efforts to comply with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z136.5-2000 (Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in Educational Institutions) and ANSI Z136.1-2007 (Safe Use of Lasers) the UA at Little Rock (UALR) campus will maintain a Laser Safety Manual. The Manual is not intended to be an exhaustive or fully comprehensive reference, but rather a guide for authorized users or other technically qualified individuals. If a topic is not covered in this Manual, requirements expressly written in ANSI Z136.1-2007, will be applied.

Its purpose is to ensure that all lasers and laser systems are operated in a safe manner conducive to the health of all users. In addition, the Manual will provide requirements designed to ensure that adequate protection against collateral hazards are provided. These collateral hazards may include, but not be limited to the risk of electrical shock, fire hazard from a beam or from the use of dyes and solvents, and chemical exposures from use of chemicals and vaporization of targets.
