In the following situations, follow the appropriate instructions:
- MAJOR ACCIDENTS OR ILLNESSES:
- CALL 911 or have someone else call 911 while you stay with the person!
- Provide 911 with the following information: Is the person conscious or unconscious / what happened / location.
- Call UA Little Rock Department of Public Safety (DPS) or ask someone else to call: 501-916-3400.
- Ask someone to stand outside to direct emergency personnel to the scene until a Public Safety officer arrives.
- MINOR ACCIDENTS OR ILLNESSES:
- If someone becomes ill or is injured during business hours, accompany the sick or injured person to Health Services, DSC 102.
- If the person is unable to walk, send someone to Health Services to pick up a wheelchair to transport them.
- For minor cuts or burns, have the person wash his or her own wounds with soap and cool water. Cover open wounds with a band-aid. If these supplies are not available, have the person go to Health Services.
- SEIZURES:
- Don’t panic – seizures are usually short and not life threatening.
- Protect the person – remove chairs or desks; don’t let a crowd form; pad the head with a backpack or coat; lay them on their left side.
- If the person does not IMMEDIATELY regain consciousness, call 911 and UA Little Rock DPS (501-916-3400).
- Don’t try to force anything into the mouth. If the person is having trouble breathing or is vomiting, open the airway: push the lower jaw up and out or tilt the head back. If the person does not start breathing, call 911 and UA Little Rock DPS.
- Ask someone to stand outside to direct emergency personnel to the scene until a Public Safety officer arrives.
- Following a seizure, the person may be sleepy or confused. Do not let them leave the location by themselves. Accompany them to Health Services or assist them in calling a family member or friend.
- WORK RELATED ACCIDENTS:
- In case of a work related accident, a supervisor and Health Services nurse should be contacted immediately. (Paperwork & designated providers list should be obtained from HRS. Forms must be completed within 48 hours.)
- All non-emergency workplace injuries should be directed to St. Vincent Family Clinic, 4202 S. University (located behind Denny’s). Individuals seeking emergency care should be directed to St. Vincent Infirmary.
