University of Arkansas at Little Rock students have a chance to win a free trip to New York City to explore sites important to African-American history. 

In honor of Black History Month, the UA Little Rock Anderson Institute on Race and Ethnicity is sponsoring an essay contest for undergraduate students to promote knowledge of African- American history.

In 600 words or less, students should answer: How has any one organization, movement, place, or period in New York City’s history contributed to the African-American struggle for freedom and equality?

Winners will receive a trip to New York City from July 9-15, including airfare, hotel accommodations, and meals. Winners will be announced by April 15.

Students will stay at International House and visit sites such as the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the African Burial Ground National Monument, Black Theater of Harlem, Apollo Theater, Ellis Island, Louis Armstrong Museum, and Grant’s Tomb.

Essays should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document or PDF attachment to race-ethnicity@ualr.edu by midnight on Friday, March 9. Essays should not contain any personal identifying information. Students should include their name, T-number, declared major, email address, and phone number in the body of the email.
