History Dept to Host Mid-America Conference

UALR’s Department of History is sponsoring the 32nd Mid-America Conference on History September 23 through 25 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Little Rock.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Vernon Burton, Burroughs distinguished professor of Southern history and culture at Coastal Carolina University, who will be speaking on the topic of “The Age of Lincoln: Then & Now.” Burton is the author of “The Age of Lincoln” and the editor of “The Essential Lincoln: Speeches and Correspondence.” His lecture will take place during the conference’s Friday banquet, which will be held on the Arkansas Queen riverboat at 6 p.m.

Other featured speakers are Dr. David Cook of Rice University and Poshek Fu of University of Illinois.

Breakout sessions will be held on various topics including transnational connections in world history, music as a cultural medium in history, civil rights in Arkansas, and a military history of Afghanistan from Alexander the Great to the Taliban.
