Trojans men’s basketball team picked to finish second in Sun Belt

Marcus Johnson Jr. was voted Preseason First Team All-Sun Belt.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Trojans men’s basketball team has been picked to finish second in a preseason vote among the coaches, while senior guard Marcus Johnson Jr. was voted to the Preseason First Team All-Sun Belt.

The University of Texas at Arlington is the preseason pick to win the Sun Belt, receiving 10 of 12 first-place votes. The Trojans received one first-place vote, as did third-place pick Georgia State.

Johnson is a Preseason First Team All-Sun Belt selection after a junior season that saw him average 12.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.8 steals per game. He led the Sun Belt in 3-point percentage (.466) and shot 47.3 percent from the floor and 78.3 percent from the foul line. His 75 made 3-pointers led the Trojans and ranked fifth in the Sun Belt. The Charlotte, N.C., native was voted All-Sun Belt Second Team and All-Sun Belt Tournament in 2015-16.

Defending Sun Belt Conference Champion Little Rock returns three starters and eight lettermen from last year’s record-setting squad. The Trojans became the first team in league history to win 30 games and captured Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament titles. The Trojans’ upset fifth-seeded Purdue in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Round of 32 for the first time since 1986.

The Trojans’ home attendance grew 167 percent last season, the largest percentage growth in the nation.
