Moot Court

All UALR William H. Bowen School of Law students who intend to compete on school-sponsored national or regional teams must first complete one or more courses directed at the kind of skills the desired competition features prior to entering such competition (e.g., appellate or trial advocacy, client counseling, negotiation).  Students who intend to compete on student organization-sponsored national or regional teams are strongly encouraged to complete the courses, and must have a faculty coach for their team.

Students who wish to compete on a traveling moot court team through the Moot Court Board must take (or already have taken) the two-hour Moot Court Competition class. The school always makes enough seats available for everyone who wants to take the class. For information on what the class entails, see the online course descriptions. Taking the class does not guarantee any student a spot on a traveling team, however. Invitations to join the Moot Court Board and its traveling teams are limited in number and are extended only to those individuals who excel in the Moot Court Competition class and in the Ben J. Altheimer Tournament.

Students who wish to compete on a student organization traveling moot court team for credit must take (or have previously taken) Moot Court Competition class in the fall. Again, this does not guarantee a spot on a traveling team. Such teams are chosen by the organization (BLSA, HLSA, ABA-LSD).

Students who wish to compete on a student organization traveling moot court team for no credit are strongly urged to take Moot Court Competition, but it is not a requirement.

Note Regarding Co-Curricular Hours

Credits earned in the Moot Court Competition course count as classroom credits and do not count against the limit of eight co-curricular hours. Credit earned for participating in a competition (whether sponsored by the school or by a student organization) does count toward the limit of eight co-curricular hours. A list of the other co-curricular courses is available at section II.A.5 in the Academic Rules.

Special Requirement for all Student Organization Teams

In addition to the above, you must have a faculty adviser/coach, whether or not members of the team want academic credit. The faculty adviser will grade the performances of those team members receiving academic credit.
