Harriett Pool, a Reading Recovery teacher for 20 years at Indian Hills Elementary in North Little Rock School District, published an article in the “Where Are They Now?” series in the Fall 2013 issue of the Journal of Reading Recovery. The article featured one of her former Reading Recovery students, Bryan Purifoy.
Bryan was not only challenged by learning to read, but also had the challenge of cerebral palsy. Bryan was successfully discontinued from Reading Recovery, reading in the top group of his first grade class. Bryan went on to achieve many other accomplishments. In fifth grade, he won an essay contest sponsored by Crayola Crayons. In ninth grade he was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch through Little Rock. In 1998, he was chosen to be the Easter Seals of Arkansas Child Representative and went on to be the Adult Representative in 2010 and 2011. Bryan attended Pulaski Technical College and, in 2011, was appointed to serve on the Governor’s Disability Council.
