Artificial Intelligence

For those of you seeking some guidance during this time, we have developed some materials and gathered resources that we hope will be useful to you. Among these are some general guidelines about the use of generative AI tools on campus and a glossary of terms to help us facilitate discussions on our campus relevant to our role as a metropolitan research university serving a diverse student population.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. These systems can analyze data, recognize patterns, and make predictions or decisions based on the information they process. AI is used in various applications, from personalized recommendations on streaming platforms to more complex tasks like language translation and autonomous driving.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are a specific type of AI that focuses on understanding and generating human language. These models are trained on vast amounts of text data, allowing them to predict and produce coherent sentences, paragraphs, or even entire essays based on a given prompt. Machine learning models, including LLMs, are built through a process where algorithms learn from large datasets to identify patterns and improve their performance over time. These tools are increasingly being integrated into educational, professional, and everyday contexts, offering new possibilities while also raising important ethical considerations.
