Collaborating for Success
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) and Testing Services work together to provide accessible, secure, and equitable testing environments for students with approved testing accommodations.
Students approved for testing accommodations may complete exams through Testing Services or within their academic department, depending on the accommodations and course requirements.
Student Responsibilities
Register with the DRC
Students must be registered with the Disability Resource Center and have approved testing accommodations before accommodations can be implemented.
Students should request their accommodation letters each semester and communicate with instructors as early as possible regarding their accommodation needs.
Schedule and Communicate
Students are responsible for:
- Requesting accommodation letters each semester
- Discussing testing accommodations with their instructors early in the semester
- Following Testing Services scheduling deadlines and procedures
- Contacting Testing Services or the DRC if changes or questions arise
If accommodations need to be reviewed or updated, students should contact the DRC.
Faculty Responsibilities
Faculty members may choose to utilize Testing Services to administer accommodated exams or provide approved accommodations within their department when appropriate.
Faculty are responsible for:
- Reviewing student accommodation letters
- Working with students to ensure approved testing accommodations are implemented
- Providing exams and instructions according to Testing Services procedures when utilizing their services
- Maintaining academic standards while ensuring equal access
Some accommodations or specialized course requirements may be more appropriately administered within the academic department.
Testing Services Responsibilities
Testing Services provides a secure and accessible testing environment by:
- Administering exams according to instructor instructions
- Implementing approved testing accommodations
- Monitoring exams and maintaining academic integrity
- Returning completed exams to instructors following established procedures
- Coordinating with the DRC when questions or accessibility needs arise
Testing Services staff do not interpret accommodations or modify instructor requirements without approval from the DRC.
Disability Resource Center Responsibilities
The DRC is responsible for:
- Determining eligibility for accommodations
- Reviewing documentation and engaging in the interactive process with students
- Issuing accommodation letters
- Consulting with students, faculty, and Testing Services regarding accommodation implementation
- Assisting with accessible technology and alternate format materials when appropriate
- Addressing accommodation concerns or questions
The DRC does not schedule exams or administer routine accommodated testing unless otherwise arranged.
Department-Administered Exams
Some exams may be administered by the academic department rather than Testing Services. Examples include:
- Practical or performance-based assessments
- Oral examinations
- Exams requiring specialized equipment or software
- Courses requiring instructor supervision
- Situations where departmental administration better supports the approved accommodations
The DRC, Testing Services, faculty member, and student will work together to determine the most appropriate testing location when necessary.
Academic Standards
Accommodations provide equal access to course assessments and do not alter essential course requirements or learning outcomes.
Students are expected to follow the same academic integrity policies and course expectations as all other students.
