Black History Month 2024: Sankofa

February 1 - February 29

This year’s Black History Month celebration highlights a reflection on the past, which helps us build for the future. We want to celebrate Black History Month’s foundation and Black Americans’ contributions to the world while illuminating some of UA Little Rock’s cultural enrichment.

Sankofa (pronounced SAHN-koh-fah) is an African word often associated with an African proverb that translates to “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” Sankofa emphasizes the value of using the past to build a successful future by symbolizing a bird with its head turned backward but its feet still forward.
