University TV to Broadcast Leakey Lectures

UALR’s Channel 62 television station will be broadcasting two lectures delivered on campus last week by paleontologist and environmentalist Dr. Richard Leakey.

“Climate Change and the Future of Life on Earth” will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, on cable television Channel 62. Leakey’s discussion on the origins of man will air at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, also on Channel 62.

Because of copyright restrictions, the programs will only be broadcast once.

The son of anthropologists Louis B. and Mary Leakey, Richard Leakey has been making international headlines of his own for more than 40 years. He has been credited with some of the most significant fossil discoveries in history and was named one of “TIME’s” 100 Greatest Minds of the 20th Century.

His latest book examines the five great catastrophic extinctions in the history of the planet. Written well before increased environmental awareness, Leakey stressed how human beings are dangerously reducing biodiversity, damaging eco-systems and possibly precipitating the next major mass extinction, which could number humans amongst its victims.
