Nancy Harm Succumbs to Illness

School of Social Work Professor Nancy Harm died Sunday at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock following a lengthy illness. She was 63.

Harm earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Tennessee and a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She began teaching at the UALR School of Social Work in 1990 and during her tenure helped create a certification program in animal-assisted therapy.

She was well-known for her work with patients and prisoners throughout the state. Harm and her black border-collie mix, Sam, were regular visitors to hospice and nursing homes. She also visited women prisoners in Jackson County once a month to teach them how to groom and train dogs.

School of Social Work Director Howard Turney said Harm will be remembered for her passion to alleviate suffering for unprotected populations. Memorials may be made to the UALR School of Social Work Scholarship Fund.
