UALR Helps Sponsor Little Rock Central 52nd Anniversary Symposium
Kerry Kennedy, an international human rights advocate and daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, will be among the speakers at an all-day symposium marking the 52-year anniversary of the integration of Little Rock Central High School on Friday, Sept. 25.
UALR is sponsoring the event, “Speaking the Truth on Social Issues and Politics in the 21st Century,” along with the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, and Philander Smith College. The all-day sessions will be held at the Harry R. Kendall Science and Health Mission Center on the Philander Smith campus at 1 Trudie Kibbe Reed Dr.
Other participants in the symposium include Little Rock Nine members Dr. Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, and Ernest Green; Arkansas Times Editor Max Brantley; Phillip Baldwin, president and CEO of Southern Bancorp, Inc.; Arkansas Reps. Kathy Webb and Darrin Williams; Ralph Brodie, member of Central High School class of 1958; Dr. Creshelle Nash, medical director of the Arkansas Minority Health Commission; Missouri Sen. Maida Coleman; descendants of Homer Plessy and John Ferguson, principals in the 1896 Supreme Court’s Plessy v. Ferguson case; and many others who will further an exchange of ideas related to a number of social and economic issues confronting our nation today.
A reception hosted by UALR Chancellor Joel E. Anderson will be held at 6 p.m. that evening in the atrium of the Jack Stephens Center, University and 28th Street on UALR’s campus.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required by Sept. 15. Registration forms are available at nps.gov/chsc.
