UALR to Salute N.Y. Heroes at 9/11 Ceremony
An honor guard of UALR public safety officers will post the colors of the New York City Police Department, the New York City Fire Department, and the New York Port Authority at a ceremony marking the eighth anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center.
From 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 11, members of the campus community can stop by Ledbetter Hall Room B to sign a condolence book, view a video loop and other photographs from the 2001 attack, and remember those who lost their lives. Port Authority Police lost 37 members that day. The NYPD lost 23, and the city’s fire department lost 343.
“It’s about people remembering,” said Det. Joshua Webb, who is helping coordinate UALR’s ceremony.
Representatives of the three New York agencies who lost members in the attack are sending their flags for UALR police to post in an honor guard.
At 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, a hijacked airliner struck One World Trade Center, putting a gaping hole in the side of the 110-story structure. Seventeen minutes later, another hijacked jet slammed into Two World Trade Center.
A third hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, and passengers of a fourth hijacked jet believed to be heading to the Capitol stormed the cockpit and the plane crashed in a Pennsylvania field.
