Members of Phi Alpha, UALR’s master of social work honor society, have won a national service award for their volunteer efforts, including work with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Dr. John Miller Jr., faculty advisor for the honor society, said the award includes $500 for the chapter and national recognition in The New Social Worker magazine’s fall edition. Miller has also been invited to discuss the development and success of the UALR chapter at the Council on Social Work Education Annual Meeting.

Miller also advises UALR’s social work master’s program students, who are serving as volunteers for this year’s Komen race on Oct. 17.

“Last year, 20 students volunteered to work the race. This year, 50 students have already signed up to work from 5 to 11 a.m. on race day,” he said.

During the volunteer effort, the UALR students will be dispersed throughout the crowd spreading breast cancer awareness information, especially the importance of early detection.

Last year, the Little Rock race drew 46,000 participants and another 2,900 men cheered racers on in the Three Miles of Men.
