Central Wins Engineering Contest at UALR
Math and science students from Little Rock Central High School won first place in the Junior Engineering and Technology Society’s TEAMS competition sponsored by UALR’s Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology.
Little Rock Central won with 68 points. Team A from the Arkansas School for Math, Science, and the Arts placed second with 64 points and ASMSA Team B placed third statewide with 45 points.
TEAMS – Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science – is an annual theme-based competition giving students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to discover engineering and how they can make a difference in the world.
Thirteen teams representing eight Arkansas high schools tested their skills in solving actual real-world engineering problems, competing for a possible 80 points for the state award.
The teams were divided into freshman and sophomore levels and junior and senior levels in divisions according to the sizes of their school. The open-book, open note test encouraged students to work in teams to compete for state and national honors.
Other winners at the UALR competition were:
- Division 1 – eSTEM High School (Team B)
- Division 2 – Arkansas School for Mathematics, Science & the Arts (Team A)
- Division 3 – Oak Grove High School
- Division 5 – J.A. Fair High School (Team B)
- Division 9 – Little Rock Central High School
The Arkansas winners can check their national standings when all JETS state contests are completed in April.
The TEAMS competition encourages students to become part of the action as they work together and use the practical applications of math and science to answer engineering questions about everyday world challenges.
This year’s engineering problem participating students are tackling is the critical and global need of providing access to one of nature’s most vital resources on earth: clean water.
