Iglesias to Speak at Third Arnold Lecture

Capt. David C. Iglesias, JAGC, U.S. Navy, who served as partial inspiration for the hit film “A Few Good Men,” will speak at the upcoming Arnold Lecture planned for 4:30 p.m. April 26 in the Friday Courtroom at the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law.

Iglesias will discuss “U.S. Military Commissions, Past, Present and Future.” The current team leader and spokesman with the Office of Military Commissions prosecutes war crimes and terrorism cases in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Arnold Lecture was established by the Bowen School of Law to honor Judge Richard S. Arnold and Judge Morris S. Arnold. Iglesias will be the third lecturer in this series. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia delivered the inaugural lecture in 2004, and Justice Clarence Thomas was the Arnold Lecturer in 2006.

Born in Panama to tri-lingual, tri-cultural missionary parents, Iglesias graduated from public high school in Santa Fe, N.M., from Wheaton College in 1980 and the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1984.

He served as the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico between 2001 and 2007.

Iglesias’ career has been diverse. He has also been a U.S. Navy JAG Officer, White House Fellow, state prosecutor, Military Commissions terrorism prosecutor and spokesman, military law instructor, civil rights defense attorney, political candidate, and criminal defense attorney who represented legendary Navy SEAL Dick Marcinko.

Iglesias will also engage in a discussion group with law students and faculty on Friday, April 26. To attend the Arnold Lecture, contact Patti Bell at plbell@ualr.edu.
