Trojan Men, Women advance to SBC Championship

Both UALR men’s and women’s basketball teams have advanced to the championship round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Finals. This marks the first time in history that both Trojan basketball teams will compete in the finals at the same time.

The UALR women (22-7) will play at 1 p.m. vs Western Kentucky. This is their third-straight Sun Belt Conference Championship title game with a 47-37 victory over FIU Monday. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and on ESPN3.com and on KARN-AM 920.

The UALR men (18-16) defeated Middle Tennessee last night 65-56. They’ll face North Texas at 6 p.m. today, marking the men’s first title game appearance since 1996. The game will be televised on ESPNU and KARN-AM 920.

In the women’s game against FIU, Chastity Reed led all scorers with 20 points, while Janette Merriex knocked down 11 points including three three-pointers. Marian Kursh and Britteni Williams led the team in rebounds with six.

Later that evening, Solomon Bozeman and D’Andre Williams combined for 44 points on Monday night to lead UALR to a 65-56 victory over Middle Tennessee (16-16) in the semifinals.

“I am just really proud of our basketball team. We showed some real courage tonight, showed some togetherness against a very good basketball team and well-coached basketball team. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Kermit (Davis) and the job that he does,” said UALR head coach Steve Shields.
